"Tell them to leave their girlfriends with me if they think I'm gay."
SISQO - A DRU WORLD ORDER
Listening to Sisqo's debut disc, Unleash The Dragon, is like looking into his small world. At the moment, however, the 21-year-old singer isn't quite ready to open that world to anyone, as he's too busy playing House Of The Dead, a new video game on DreamCast that he hasn't quite mastered yet. But give the youngster some time; if his gaming skills are anything like his entertaining ability, those fictional creatures on the TV screen don't stand a chance.
"People are hearing [the new CD], and saying they're really liking it, so I feel I'm on the right track," Sisqo says, as sounds of his video game exploits rattle over the telephone line. "I'm nervous. I hope I'm on the right track. If I flop, who's gonna wanna hear the group? This is a real hard decision."
Unleash The Dragon is a definite step up from Sisqo's other job, that of blonde frontman for R&B group Dru Hill. Although it took some time to make his solo effort a reality, the result is a sonic collection of R&B, pop, and old-fashioned soul--tools that Sisqo believes will make his project shine.
"I set out to do something fresh," he explains. "To me, R&B's pretty dead right now, and I want to put the excitement back. Before I started this album, I listened to a lot of music and really thought about what makes a superstar a superstar. Why are people like Michael Jackson and Madonna so popular? I realized that Michael was the last real singing and dancing superstar to come out of R&B. I can fill that void."
When Sisqo isn't making plans to take over the entertainment world, he's biding his time at local malls. Yet the man isn't after Nike sneakers or Fubu pants. Rather, he's interested in "anything that deals with girls," he clarifies.
The singer claims, however, that getting girls is hard for him nowadays. "Their guards be up so high," he laments. "'Cause they all think I'm trying to do it." So, is that true? "Naw." Sisqo then pauses and adds, "Sometimes it's true."
When asked how he gets past the apprehensive attitudes of wary women, Sisqo says, "You gotta pretty much just take it. And hope that they like you for you. I've had my feelings hurt one time, and I learned from that mistake. I learned a lot. A girl created Sisqo. After my first love broke my heart, I dyed my hair blonde."
The video game suddenly loses its hold over the singer, and he begins to speak quietly into the receiver, like a patient conversing with his therapist. Did this girl break up with him before or after Dru Hill? "Before," he answers. Has she contacted him since Dru Hill became successful? "I was messing with her a little while afterwards just so I'd feel better again," he admits. "See, now I feel better about it. It seemed like once I found out who I was, I got it together."
All good things must end, however, and Sisqo's first love soon found herself on the wrong side of the door. In short, the singer says he grew tired of her. "It was like she was perfect for Baltimore, but I had saw more than Baltimore, ya know?" he explains, emphasizing his travels across the globe. "It's like, if I'ma be with a girl, she's gotta be the best in the world. If I'm gonna give you my time and be with you for real, [then] you've gotta be special."
I mention to Sisqo that I saw him on TV, explaining away a rumor about his alleged homosexuality, and ask how he feels about such allegations. "It's only guys who say it. No, some girls say it too, though. I just be like, 'Yo, if you feel I'm gay that just means I made it.'" Does he have any leanings toward that lifestyle at all? "No. Hell no," he answers firmly. "I don't have nothing against nobody that do, but I don't."
When asked the origin of the rumor, Sisqo says it started because "my hair is blonde and I'm different. See, once you the man, that's when everybody has something to say about you. I mean, I'm happy they saying I'm gay. It don't bother me." He admits that the rumors bothered him early on, but then playfully adds, "Tell them to leave their girlfriends with me if they think I'm gay."
